Jay Peter Salvas is a New York City-based graphic designer and visual artist. 

Through the lens of the International Typographic Style, his design practice focuses on helping commercial and cultural clients build thoughtful and dynamic design systems that support and elevate their institution.

He started his career as a book designer at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, CA. Since then, he’s worked in a variety of creative industries where he’s focused on brand identity, print and digital design, campaigns, packaging, typography, directing a team of creatives, and experimental making.

He has received creative recognition from numerous publications such as How, Print, Communication Arts, Step, Type Design: Radical Innovations and Experimentation by Harper Collins International, and the British Journal of Photography; and such institutions as the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), the Art Institute of Boston, San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Yale University. He has served on occasion as a visiting designer at Parsons The New School for Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). 

He holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Yale University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Rhode Island School of Design.

Disney Electronics Historic Characters Packaged in New Narratives

Disney was established in 1923 by brothers Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney.

Today, Disney is a global entertainment brand, renowned for its enchanting movies, iconic theme parks, and beloved characters.

Context

Disney’s iconic storytelling and magical experiences, featuring beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Princess Jasmine, and rides like It’s a Small World, have made it a household name.

Inspired by this heritage, the design system for Disney Electronics’ packaging reimagines these familiar elements by borrowing imagery from the Disney archive. Through the implementation of textures, playful typography, and historic forms, the resulting design feels both nostalgic and contemporary.

Mickey Television

The custom artwork for Mickey Television celebrates historic typography and imagery from The Mickey Mouse Club, one of the most popular television shows for children in the 1950s.

Fantasyland Jukebox

The custom artwork for Fantasyland Jukebox borrows classic elements from vintage Alice in Wonderland artwork, including whimsical vines, flowers, and teapots.

Princess Jasmine Television

The custom artwork for Princess Jasmine Television features the princess juxtaposed with forms and patterns from the iconic It’s a Small World ride at the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.
